A Tale of Three Cities: A Comparative Analysis of Newspaper Coverage of the 2011 Live Cattle Export Suspension

The live exportation of animals from Australia to Indonesia is controversial due to the conflict of ethical and economic priorities. This paper compares newspaper coverage, in Darwin, Jakarta and Sydney, of Australian live cattle exports, two weeks surrounding the Four Corners report, ‘A Bloody Business’. It is the first paper to find a statistically significant increase in coverage following the Four Corners report and concludes that the studied newspapers presented different perspectives and potential solutions. Despite all bar one of the newspapers opposing a complete ban, this paper argues that it was the only way to adequately protect the exported cattle.
